LAS VEGAS (October 28, 2016)- Aaron Halpain was announced as the tenth Mikel Moreno Scholarship winner today. The annual award was created in honor of the late Mikel Moreno, and it will be presented to Halpain at the ABBI Award Banquet on November 5 at the South Point Hotel.
Mikel, the son of Julio Moreno and Cindy Rosser, was a successful bucking bull breeder, talented athlete and exceptional human being. He was the grandson of ProRodeo Hall of Fame member Cotton Rosser. After losing a long battle with leukemia in 2006, Mikel’s parents established the award to help other Junior ABBI breeders follow the college dream that he never got to achieve.
“Mikel was an inspiration for so many people and a real role model for anyone who wants to be a stock contractor,” said Halpain. “I am so honored to be recognized in this way.”
Mikel passed way during his senior year of high school. Despite his young age, he was already an accomplished stock contractor who loved to be on the chutes. His legacy lives on through the offspring of great bucking bulls like Reindeer and Troubadour.
Halpain joins a long list of young adults who shared Mikel’s passion for bucking bulls and were honored with the award that bears his name: Wyatt Wentz (2015), Thor Hoefer (2014), Diego Dow (2013), Cooper Downer (2012), Megan Walker (2011), Rossi Hoefer (2010), Taylor Hurst (2009), Bryant Smith (2008) and Jonathan Chandler (2007).
